Los Cabos, Mexico Destination Wedding

cabo resort weddings

Katie and Mike landed in Cabo, Mexico for their destination wedding (and honeymoon that followed).  This brave couple did not take a site visit prior to the week of the wedding, so they entrusted their big day in Sarai and Martha from Signature Event Consulting and Design to make sure everything was perfect from afar.  Katie shared with us the insight that led to this location.  “Before we were even engaged, Mike and I already knew that we wanted to have a destination wedding. Having spent ten years living in Mexico City as a child, I knew that this was our number one choice for the locale. While Mike had his heart set on a beach, I had hopes for a wedding at a sprawling hacienda. Cabo was so beautiful that it was the perfect destination- and our wedding venue, Hacienda, was truly the best of both worlds; we had a gorgeous hacienda filled with character AND it was right on the water. Our dreams as two Americans hosting an authentic Mexican wedding were only achieved because of the understanding, dedication, and creative genius of our wedding planners Sarai and Martha.  From the paleta cart on the dance floor to the tacos al pastor as people left, it was the wedding of our dreams filled with gorgeous detail.”

Then we asked Martha and Sarai how they pulled it off with the couple from afar.  It is important to note that Katie and Mike did not have the opportunity to travel to Cabo before the wedding for a site visit or at all! Keep in mind, we meet most of our couples at least once and often many more times before the big day! Though we shared many emails, conference calls and skype chats we met Katie and Mike when they arrived in Cabo just days before the wedding! But, we were already great friends! We had established a great relationship and they completely trusted in us and our process.”  And for this couple, that process was all about finding inspiration within their lives and translating it into the event.  “Katie is an avid reader and an enterprising traveler! Having spent some years in Mexico City and Madrid, she is fascinated by and has a real passion for the Mexican and Spanish cultures!  The floral ceremonial arch was a vision first inspired by Katie’s passions. It was a labor of love and a collaborative creative undertaking between Katie, myself and floral designer Pina Hernandez, and it became a real focal point of the wedding. The arch was an interpretation of an image of the entranceway to a Parisian restaurant. Using this image as our guide, we decided to create a wooden structure with lavender floral accents and incorporate inspirational quotes about love from Mexican musicians and writers (some of Katie’s favorites)! We have to give credit to our amazing floral designer, Pina, the wood structure was built exclusively for us in Pina’s studio by her husband, a talented carpenter! And Pina helped to design the stunning floral decor and make Katie’s vision a beautiful reality and a unique creation we were all so proud of!”

“We also incorporated fun accents and authentic Mexican details to continue with the Mexican fiesta theme, without being expected or excessive. We included mini papel picado, a traditional Mexican craft that incorporates laser-cut paper in elaborate designs (Katie’s a huge fan!) as escort cards.”

But weddings, destination or not, don’t always come without a hiccup or two.  “Six months prior to the wedding we encountered a serious challenge: We had to find a new wedding venue for Katie and Mike! The original venue announced they would be closing for internal projects and could no longer accommodate Katie and Mike’s group. Of course it was essential to move fast to relocate, but we also felt it was important to find a location that still resonated with Katie and Mike’s initial vision.  The new location would have to be a beach front property that would guarantee privacy and allow for wedding festivities to continue late into the night! Katie and Mike chose Hacienda Cocina & Cantina. In fact, despite the initial stress of relocating, in the end we all felt it was the perfect place!  The only difficulty at the Hacienda was working to create an intimate setting for the ceremony, where the beach is longer than it is wide. By simply repositioning the arrangement of the chairs, we made their guests feel cozy, without being cramped!”
