Riviera Maya Destination Wedding Trash the Dress Session

Today’s destination wedding is actually the day-after the wedding day, in a beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico trash the dress (and suit) session! Kira Horvath Photography and newlyweds, Kerra and Patrick, headed out to the beautiful Cenotes to capture some unforgettable private moments and memories.

Photographer Kira Horvath shared the day with us. Cenotes are the only source of fresh water on the Yucatan Peninsula. They are these amazing, mystical, crystal clear pools of water usually set deep in the jungle or can be found in hidden underground caverns. I had booked a destination wedding on the Riviera Maya and was psyched when my couple, Kerra & Patrick, said they wanted to do a Trash the Dress session at one of them. I had been to the area several times before and knew the perfect spot near Playa del Carmen.”

“Cenote Jardin del Eden is only 15 miles from Playa del Carmen and a popular tourist attraction. I had visited the cenote a few days before the shoot to scout out the location and practice working under the water. Kerra & Patrick chose to do their Trash the Dress in a cenote because they thought the photos would come out better in fresh water rather than in the ocean. Also, they had seen photos from other TTD session in cenotes and thought those photos looked so angelic and amazingly unique.”

“Trash the Dress sessions are not always the easiest shoots. First off, it is important that you feel comfortable and confident in the water and have the ability to hold your breath for long periods of time. Then you have to remember to open your eyes under the water while looking relaxed and trying to keep your body graceful. It’s a lot of work! Luckily, the underwater shoot was a breeze for Kerra, a triathlete, who is super comfortable in the water. She was so patient and willing to try all of the crazy ideas I was coming up with so that we could get the best shot. Patrick was such a good sport also, cheering on his new wife even when his soaking wet suit started to make him shiver.”
